General Industrial Hemp Union
One plant,
so many options!
Industrial hemp is one of the key factors in leading Latvia towards a prosperous, sustainable and circular bio-economy sector, and it is not for some people, but for many.
Climate change is affecting every inhabitant of the planet. It is a global problem, the solution to which lies in ourselves and in the way we use the resources of the planet and treat nature.
For farmers
Breeding and cultivation of industrial hemp
Sowing and harvesting
Pre-processing and logistics
One of our missions is to call on all those who already cultivate land, or who are ready to start, so that with the help of cooperative knowledge in agriculture and optimistic energy we can all work together on our land smarter, more efficiently and with joint efforts, while conserving resources and nature.
For producers
Recycling of the entire plant with a “Zero waste” approach
Seeds, leaves, stems, roots
Food, textiles, composite materials, bio-fuel
The world is changing and the demand for new, healthy and environmentally friendly materials that meet modern and high quality standards is growing day by day.
We – Latvia and the Baltics – can advance with this offer, because we have the fertile land required for it, smart and hard-working people, processing opportunities, as well as the courage and opportunity to achieve the rest.
For constructors
CO2 negative buildings
Hemp concrete and wool
Building material produced in Latvia
By mixing the woody, inside part of the hemp plant stem – hemp splints – with lime and water, it is possible to obtain a building material that was known and used in Ancient Rome – hemp concrete. In addition to being durable, natural, safe, non-combustible, anti-mould, heat and sound insulating, this material contains up to 312 kg of CO2 gas per 1 m3 embedded into hemp concrete from the atmosphere during construction, thus sealing it in the building structures.
In addition to this building material, hemp fibres are used to produce heat and sound-proof natural wool and other valuable products.
Biorefining
Circular bio-economy
Future technologies
Maximum added value for the industry
This is one of the areas of the industry with the potentially highest added value, which could provide the dynamics required for the industry to develop immediately, without delay. Currently, the association is actively working on the improvement of legislation in Latvia in order to give this worldwide highly demanded field the opportunity to exist and develop in Latvia as well.
